Ince set for Hull & Sunderland talks

Blackpool winger Thomas Ince is expected to hold talks with Hull and Sunderland on Wednesday as he prepares to make a decision on his future.

The England Under-21 international has been given permission by the Championship side to discuss a loan move with Premier League clubs.

The 21-year-old met with Swansea City and Crystal Palace on Monday and held talks with Stoke City on Tuesday.

Ince is approaching the end of his contract at Bloomfield Road.

Speaking after Tuesday's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace, Hull manager Steve Bruce insisted he was not planning a move for the former Liverpool youngster.

"There's nothing in that and we're not likely to do anything before Friday," Bruce told BBC Radio Humberside.

Ince began his career at Anfield, making one substitute appearance in the League Cup before joining Blackpool in August 2011.

He has scored 33 goals in 113 matches for the Seasiders and was the subject of January interest from the Reds last season, while he turned down a move to newly-promoted Cardiff in the summer for family reasons.

And he has not featured in either of Blackpool's two matches since his father, Paul, was sacked as manager on 21 January.

Blackpool lost 5-1 at Reading on Tuesday and are 15th in the Championship.

Hearts 2-1 St Mirren

29 January 2014Last updated at 21:42

Share this page print By Clive LindsayBBC Scotland Sport Hearts came from behind to defeat St Mirren and record consecutive wins for the first time this season.

The Scottish Premiership's bottom side were behind within a minute from a Steven Thompson header.

But Hearts were level four minutes later as Callum Paterson rose unmarked to head in from close range.

And, when Marc McAusland was ruled to have felled Dale Carrick shortly after the break, the defender was sent off and Jamie Hamill scored the penalty.

Hearts thereafter survived a couple of nervous moments against the 10 men from Paisley to boost their faint hopes of avoiding relegation.

The Edinburgh side, docked 15 points at the start of the season, had moved into positive points for the first time at the weekend.

Rangers reject Wallace bids

Lee Wallace: Wanted by Nottingham Forest

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Rangers have turned down a second, undisclosed bid from Nottingham Forest for Scotland international Lee Wallace.

The 26-year-old has been strongly linked with a move south of the border and Forest are now attempting to land him.

Sky Sports sources understand that Rangers have now rejected two bids from Billy Davies's side.

Wallace has been with Rangers since 2011 and has two years left on his current deal.

Whilst Forest have been in talks with Rangers over Wallace, we also understand a deal to land David Vaughan from Sunderland - currently on loan at the club - is close.

Celtic too good for Killie

Joe Ledley celebrates after opening the scoring

Celtic moved 18 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after a dominant 4-0 win over Kilmarnock.

James Forrest's return from injury added fresh attacking impetus to Neil Lennon's side and he played his part in the first two goals before Charlie Mulgrew and Amido Balde completed the scoring.

The Hoops scored a stylish opener in the 11th minute as Forrest spun away from his marker before his threaded pass allowed Joe Ledley to fire past Craig Samson.

Forrest was again the creator when Celtic doubled their lead, his jinking run caused chaos before the winger's dangerous cross was turned into his own net by Lee Ashcroft (21).

Killie were struggling to hold the hosts at bay and Scott Brown's shot drew a decent save from Samson, while Virgil van Dijk's fierce effort flew over.

Celtic finally had some cause for concern after the break, with Manuel Pascali's volley forcing Fraser Forster into action, but the Hoops regained command and Mulgrew's shot hit the post.

The full-back was not frustrated for long as a clever chip from Joe Ledley picked out Mulgrew (68), who confidently clipped the ball past Samson.

Kris Commons dragged the ball wide as Celtic kept up their assault in the closing stages and substitute Balde (90) added a fourth when his shot slipped through Samson's grasp.

Hearts defeat 10-man Saints

Jamie Hamill: Netted the winning goal from the penalty spot

Hearts picked up a second successive win in the Scottish Premiership after claiming a 2-1 victory over 10-man St Mirren.

The Jambos appear doomed to relegation, but they are not going down without a fight as Jamie Hamill's controversial penalty secured the points after Marc McAusland had been sent-off.

The visitors snatched the lead after just 29 seconds as Conor Newton's inviting cross was headed into the corner by Steven Thompson.

But St Mirren's joy was shortlived as Callum Paterson (5) latched onto David Smith's deflected cross and nodded the ball past Marian Kello.

Paterson could have added to his tally soon afterwards but Kello's superb reaction save kept out his close-range header, while the other goalscorer Thompson fired wide at the opposite end.

The Buddies began to get a grip on the game and McAusland's header hit the bar before Newton nodded narrowly wide of the net.

But the match turned in the home side's favour after the break as McAusland appeared to be harshly penalised for a challenge on Dale Carrick and Hamill (52) slotted in the resulting spot-kick.

St Mirren still mounted a fightback, despite the loss of McAusland, and Jim Goodwin's free-kick tested Jamie MacDonald, while Thompson flicked over the bar.

Carrick should have wrapped up the points for Hearts but he slid the ball against the post and St Mirren nearly punished this miss as Thompson volleyed over in the dying stages.

Lennon angry at penalty call

Danny Lennon: His side are ninth in the table

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet St Mirren manager Danny Lennon believes the penalty that condemned his side to a 2-1 defeat against Hearts should not have been given.

The decision by referee Steven McLean to award a penalty after Marc McAusland was adjudged to have bundled over Dale Carrick just after half-time, which saw the defender sent off and Jamie Hamill score from the spot proved the decisive moment in the game.

Earlier, Steven Thompson had given Saints a first-minute lead before Callum Paterson levelled for Hearts four minutes later.

After reviewing the penalty incident, Lennon felt that the between McAusland and Carrick occurred outside the box and was not enough to warrant a foul.

"I'm angry and I'm angry at the fact it was a game that was there for the taking, certainly in the second half," he said.

"A big, big decision has gone against us within the first five minutes and it has cost us dearly.

"I'm angry with the decision, I'm not angry with the performance because I thought even with 10 men, the energy they brought and the opportunities we created, we had Hearts on the back foot.

"You can certainly see this young Hearts side are maturing, they brought a lot to the game but it was a big, big decision that has cost us.

"I've watched it four or five times and I'm still inconclusive whether there is any contact at all.

"If you're asking me 'is it inside the box?' No, it's not.

"Sometimes they go for you and sometimes they don't. I certainly thought it was a game-changer in terms of trying to control the game."

Hearts manager Gary Locke was pleased with the character his side showed to come back after falling behind so early in the game.

"I thought the character was there in abundance again, we've shown it all season," said Locke, whose side also won 2-1 at Ross County on Saturday. "We've had a lot of lows but this week has been great for us.

"I think you can see that it gives everyone a lift, not just myself and the backroom team but the players and the supporters.

"It has been a very difficult season for us but I have been over the moon with the way the players have performed."

Thistle wait on Higginbotham

Kallum Higginbotham: Partick winger facing spell on the sidelines

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Partick Thistle boss Alan Archibald is unsure how long he will be without Kallum Higginbotham after the Englishman suffered a knee injury in Saturday's goalless draw at St Mirren.

Jason Naismith was cautioned for a crude lunge on the winger midway through the first half at St Mirren Park.

The challenge came shortly after the home support had been calling for a red card for Thistle right-back Jordan McMillan for a two-footed challenge on Jim Goodwin.

"I think it is six stitches he's got in a knee wound," said Archibald.

"It's just opened right up. I think the boy's blades or studs sliced his knee open.

"I didn't have a chance to speak to him and I never saw it closely. I was just more frustrated because I thought he was causing them problems down that side of the pitch.

"The lad was booked for the challenge and I'm not sure how bad it was, but it's right on the joint of the knee so it's a problem because it's probably going to keep opening up.

"I haven't spoken to the medical team but I think it'll be a couple of weeks anyway."

Commons double downs Hibs

Kris Commons: Puts Celtic on the way to a 11th straight league victory

Kris Commons' double took the forward's league tally to 16 Scottish Premiership goals as Celtic defeated Hibernian 4-0 at Easter Road.

Virgil van Dijk and Teemu Pukki were also on the scoresheet on Sunday after the league leaders capitalised on a tiring Hibs outfit to strike three times inside the final quarter hour and stretch their lead at the top to 15 points after 22 unbeaten league games.

Commons was able to capitalise on Emilio Izaguirre's hopeful punt forward and a panicking mix-up between Hibs central defenders Jordan Forster and Michael Nelson to fire the Hoops in front after only nine minutes.

Celtic fail with Griffiths bid

Leigh Griffiths: Wolves striker is a target for Celtic

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Wolves manager Kenny Jackett has confirmed the League 1 club rejected an offer from Celtic for Leigh Griffiths.

The Scotland international has scored 13 times for Wolves this season, but it has been reported he is unsettled in the Black Country.

Griffiths joined Wolves from Dundee three years ago and the 23-year-old has had two successful loan spells at Hibernian since his switch to Molineux.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed he is keen to bring another striker to the club before the end of the January transfer window.

But Jackett insists Griffiths will be included in his squad to play Oldham at Boundary Park on Tuesday.

A statement from Wolves read: "Kenny has confirmed that Celtic have made a bid for Leigh Griffiths which has been rejected.

"The striker remains in the squad for the Oldham game."

Lennon is convinced Griffiths would thrive at Parkhead.

"He had a fantastic season last year. I think he has improved as a player and there is scope for him to get better.

"It's not just his goals: he can see a pass; his movement is very, very good; he has got physically stronger; he has got pace about him as well.

"He has broken into the Scotland squad. He knows the environment and I think he would improve here with the players around him.

"People would have said when we brought Gary Hooper in that you hadn't heard of him. You hadn't heard of (Victor) Wanyama and (Emilio) Izaguirre, people like that.

"People say 'he can't do this' and 'he can't do that'. They all did it. We believe that, if Leigh comes here, he can play at this level comfortably and, at his age, there is a good five, six years for him to improve and reach his peak.

"Scott McDonald came here from Motherwell a few years ago and scored a huge amount of goals and went on to score in Europe as well. I think Leigh can do the same."

Tannadice clash washed out

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Monday night's Scottish Premiership game between Dundee United and St Johnstone has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Persistent heavy rain saturated the Tannadice playing surface forcing match officials to call a lunchtime inspection.

Following the check, and with further rain forecast for later in the afternoon, the decision was taken to call off the fixture early to prevent St Johnstone fans making the short journey north.

No new date for the fixture has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Dundee United have revealed their home game against Motherwell, scheduled for Saturday, February 22, has been moved to Friday, 21 February (7.45pm).

Also, the away match against Hibernian, due to take place on Saturday, March 1, has been moved back to the previous day with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Lennon: Forster to stay

Fraser Forster: Celtic keen for goalkeeper to stay until at least the summer

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Celtic boss Neil Lennon expects goalkeeper Fraser Forster to still be at the club when the January transfer window closes.

Lennon confessed that he wouldn't be too shocked if an offer did come in for the in-form 25-year-old, but is keen for the England international to stay with the Scottish champions.

Forster has gone 10 consecutive domestic games without conceding a goal and Lennon is hoping to keep him at the club until at least the end of the season.

Forster has already made one international appearance for England and will want to continue his impressive performances to try and gain a spot in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.

Lennon told the Scotsman: "I've said all along that I'm pretty confident he'll be here when the window closes, as the majority of our main players will be.

"It wouldn't surprise me if an offer were to come in. But we're not encouraging it at the moment."

When asked if he thought the England international would still be at the club at the end of the January transfer window, he said: "I'm pretty sure, yeah.

"I've said all along that we spoke to Fraser in the summer, we emphasised our position - and he was quite happy and content with that.

"I think he's pretty happy here. I know he has got personal aims in the future. But his short-term future, anyway, is with Celtic."

King poised for Swansea deal

Adam King: Hearts midfielder close to joining Swansea

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Sky Sports understands Swansea City are poised to sign Adam King after the Hearts teenager underwent a medical on Monday.

King has been a long-term target for Swansea, who are believed to have made an approach for his services at the end of the summer transfer window in 2013, but saw an offer knocked back by Hearts' administrators.

The 18-year-old only made his Hearts debut in December in the 7-0 defeat by Celtic in the Scottish Cup and he has since gone on to appear twice in the Scottish Premiership.

He can play in midfield or in defence, and King has been attracting interest from several clubs, in addition to Swansea.

However, it appears that Swansea are close to snapping up King after he was in south Wales on Monday to have a medical ahead of joining Michael Laudrup's side.

Celtic v Kilmarnock preview

James Forrest: In line to return for Celtic against Kilmarnock

Celtic winger James Forrest is in line to return to the champions' starting line-up for Wednesday's home game against Kilmarnock.

The Scotland star has shaken off the injury which ruled him out of Sunday's 4-0 victory at Hibernian but the match comes too soon for full-back Adam Matthews.

The Welshman has been sidelined for almost a month with a calf injury but is set to return to training with the first team later this week.

Striker Anthony Stokes is again unavailable as he completes his two-game ban following his red card against Motherwell earlier this month.

Recent recruit Stefan Johansen, who was given the final 10 minutes against Hibs, could figure from the off along with Teemu Pukki, who scored the third goal of the match following his half-time introduction at Easter Road.

Returning Kilmarnock playmaker Alexei Eremenko will go straight into Allan Johnston's squad for the clash.

The Finland international has agreed a deal until the end of the season but his lack of match fitness means the 30-year-old is unlikely to start at Parkhead.

On-loan defender Jackson Irvine, meanwhile, cannot play against his parent club and Darren Barr (hip) and winger David Silva (knee) both miss out through injury.

Hearts teen joins Swansea

Adam King: Hearts midfielder signs for Swansea

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Hearts teenage midfielder Adam King has joined Swansea City on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The 18-year-old has been a regular member of Gary Locke's squad this season.

A statement on the club's website said: "We would like to wish Adam well. This is a great opportunity for him and we will follow his progress with Swansea with interest.

"We are aware that a number of our younger talented players are attracting the interest of other clubs including English Premier League and Championship.

"These boys are gaining valuable first-team experience at Hearts in a highly-competitive environment and many are also featuring as Scotland

internationalists at their relevant age groups.

"This is clearly providing opportunities for them to expedite their career paths and makes them viable signing targets for other teams.

"However, our position is quite clear that any offer for a Hearts player must firstly mirror our valuation for that player and secondly provide the player with a clear route for progression in his career."

Eremenko back at Kilmarnock

Alexei Eremenko: Targets top-six finish with Kilmarnock

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Kilmarnock have re-signed former fans' favourite Alexei Eremenko until the end of the season.

The midfielder, who has been capped 59 times for Finland, spent a year on loan at Rugby Park between 2010-2011, scoring four goals in 31 matches.

His form earned him a nomination for the Scottish Footballer of the Year award and Celtic were reportedly keen to take the 30-year-old to Parkhead at the end of his contract.

However, he decided to team up with his younger brother Roman at Russian club Rubin Kazan where he spent two years before moving to Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan last year.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: "To be honest, I didn't expect to return to the club as soon as I have.

"I thought I would come back one day, maybe when I was 34 or 35, but that makes no difference. I am just delighted to be back here.

"I'm glad the deal could be done and I can't wait to put the Killie shirt on and get playing again.

"However, my last game was about three months ago so it may take a little bit time before I am ready.

"I'm not match-fit, that's for sure, but I have been training and I just need time...maybe two or three weeks to get my fitness back.

"Hopefully against Dundee United in two and a half weeks I will be ready to return.

"My main mission is to help the team to get to the top six and I hope I don't disappoint the fans.

"I want to help bring the younger players through and if someone needs some advice or help on the pitch then I am happy to help them."

Fisher delighted at Celtic run

Darnell Fisher: Celtic full-back is looking to build on his recent run in the team

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Celtic full-back Darnell Fisher is determined to make the most of his run in the team as the Scottish champions look to extend their unbeaten league run.

The 19-year-old is enjoying an extended spell in the Hoops team because of injuries to international defenders Adam Matthews and Mikael Lustig.

Fisher has been taking advice from both players and he believes his confidence has grown this season.

"It inspires me," he said. "It is good, it helps me, it is not intimidating, I can learn.

"You can talk to them and ask them certain things about the game. Both are very good full-backs. Adam is quicker and Mikael is good in the air.

"I get little bits from each of them and you try to put your own stamp on it and try to be better.

"I just wanted to play as much as possible this season. I didn't think I would play this much but I need to keep pushing.

"You don't know what is going to happen in football, especially here. I have to keep pushing and trying to learn."

Celtic have not lost a league game since they were beaten at Motherwell last April, and the Englishman is hopeful that the team will increase the run to 26 matches against Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

Hoops keeper Fraser Forster has not conceded a goal in nine league games either, and Fisher sees no reason why that run cannot be extended further.

"As long as the run keeps going it is going to get harder each game. We are aware of it and we have to be on our toes at all times.

"For Fraser and the back four, we want to keep as many clean sheets as possible."

Mannus injury blow for Saints

Alan Mannus: St Johnstone goalkeeper sidelined

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet St Johnstone goalkeeper Alan Mannus has been ruled out for six to eight weeks at least after fracturing a bone in his thumb.

Saints confirmed on their official website that the Northern Ireland international sustained the injury in training to deliver a heavy blow to manager Tommy Wright's plans.

Following the postponement of the Saints' Scottish Premiership clash with Dundee United at Tannadice on Monday night, Mannus was due to serve the second of his two-match suspension in the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen at Tynecastle on Saturday, but will now be out until March at least.

Unless Wright brings in another keeper before the transfer window closes on Friday, 41-year-old player-coach Steve Banks will continue between the sticks.

Wright said: "Alan damaged his thumb in training on Monday.

"At this stage we don't think he will need an operation, but he will see a specialist later in the week and we'll have more information after that.

"However, we are looking at six to eight weeks absence as a minimum."

Hearts v St Mirren preview

Ryan Stevenson: Hearts midfielder is suspended for the match with St Mirren

Ryan Stevenson will complete his two-match ban on Wednesday when Hearts take on St Mirren at Tynecastle in the Scottish Premiership.

The midfielder was initially going to miss Sunday's game against Inverness Caley but, because the fixture with St Mirren was brought forward, he will now be eligible for the Scottish League Cup semi- final.

Hearts will also be without teenager Adam King, whose transfer to Swansea should be finalised within the next few days.

Long-term absentees Jamie Walker and Jason Holt remain sidelined as Gary Locke's team hope to build on Saturday's 2-1 victory over Ross County.

St Mirren boss Danny Lennon has no fresh fitness concerns as he takes his charges to the bottom club.

Lennon is unlikely to make changes as the Buddies look to stretch their unbeaten run to three games.

The visitors are again without striker Stephane Bahoken (thigh), midfielder Kenny McLean (knee) and winger Gary Teale (groin).

Baird released by Thistle

John Baird: Striker released by Partick Thistle

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Up To £30 Free Matched Bet Partick Thistle striker John Baird has been released by boss Alan Archibald.

The former Raith and Dundee player moved to Firhill last summer but has failed to net in 17 outings for the Jags, the vast majority of which have come off the bench.

Baird was used mostly as Kris Doolan's understudy during the first half of the season but has now dropped even further down Thistle's pecking order following the arrival of on-loan Sheffield United striker Lyle Taylor earlier this month.

The 28-year-old is now set to try his luck in the Scottish Championship after former St Mirren midfielder Ricky Gillies - who now represents the player on behalf of the Pro-Legal Group - confirmed he had parted company with Partick.

He said: "John has agreed a compromise agreement with Thistle. They have paid up his contract and allowed him to move on.

"He hasn't got anything else lined up just yet but there is interest from a few Championship clubs."

MADRID (Reuters) - Cayetano Re, a former Barcelona forward who was La Liga top scorer half a century ago and also played for and coached his native Paraguay, has died at the age of 75, Barca said on Tuesday.

Re played for the Catalan club for four seasons and won a King's Cup in 1963, Barca said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.com).

He netted 25 goals in 30 matches in the 1964-65 La Liga season to top the scoring chart ahead of Brazilian Waldo of Valencia.

Re later moved to Barca's city rivals Espanyol before ending his playing career in 1972.

He coached Paraguay at the World Cup finals in Mexico in 1986 where his side were beaten 3-0 by Gary Lineker's England in the last 16.

(Reuters) - The Continental Hockey League (KHL) has fined Dinamo Riga one million roubles ($30,300) after a Nazi symbol was displayed during a ceremony on the ice before their match against Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk earlier this month.

"Use of any graphic forms showing Nazi signs and symbols, as well as similar images, are inadmissible for the KHL clubs and their fans," the KHL said in a statement on Tuesday.

A military ensemble appeared to unfurl a large swastika on the ice in a ceremony, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Latvian Republic, just before Dinamo's 4-3 win on November 17.

"It has many names, but this is not a swastika," Dinamo's press secretary Janis Stepitis said, adding it was used as a symbol of the Latvian armed forces before the country was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940.

The KHL said Dinamo, based in the Latvian capital Riga, could face expulsion from the championship in the case of a similar incident.

Dinamo are third in the KHL's Western Conference with 59 points from 30 games, nine points behind leaders SKA St Petersburg.

The KHL, an international league set up in 2008, has 28 clubs from Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Croatia competing in four divisions from September to April for the Gagarin Cup.

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - A goalkeeping blunder by Atletico Madrid's Thibaut Courtois gave Zenit St Petersburg a qualification lifeline as they fought back to draw 1-1 in their Champions League Group G match on Tuesday.

Toby Alderweireld deflected a right-wing Igor Smolnikov cross towards the net in the 74th minute and Belgian Courtois, on loan from Chelsea, flapped at the ball as it dropped over his head into the net for a precious equaliser for the Russians.

Zenit are second in the table with six points from five matches, two more than Porto ahead of the Portuguese team's tussle with bottom club Austria Vienna later on Tuesday.

Leaders Atletico (13 points), already through to the knockout stage as group winners and missing several regulars, went ahead in the 53rd minute when Adrian Lopez raced clear on the left before slipping the ball under keeper Yuri Lodygin.

"Both sides played well and in an organised way," said Zenit's Italian coach Luciano Spalletti. "Atletico sat back while we attacked because we needed to get a result.

"They tried to attack on the break when the opportunities arose. In all three of our home games we produced good football and that is what matters to me."

Atletico's Argentine coach Diego Simeone was satisfied with his team's display.

"We had chances to win in the second half but... we achieved a good result against a great team," he said. "The team performed really well and that's a good sign for the future."

PSG to continue play at Parc des Princes

AFPParis Saint-Germain have reached an agreement with the city of Paris that will see the French Ligue 1 champions remain at the Parc des Princes for another 30 years.

The deal, which still needs to be formally ratified by the Paris Saint-Germain Administrative Council and the Paris Council, also includes plans for a renovation of the stadium which has been operating in its current capacity since 1972.

"This agreement, which will take the form of a convention with a 30-year duration, will be put to the Paris Saint-Germain Administrative Council and the Paris Council in the coming days for official approval," read a statement on the club's official website.

"This agreement highlights Paris Saint-Germain's attachment to the club's history and roots, as well as the club's desire to have a football specific venue in the heart of the city. In order to offer fans a unique experience in this historic stadium, the club has committed to a very ambitious renovation program that will begin in the coming months.

"This modernisation of the venue will affect all areas of the Parc des Princes and ensure a first-class viewing experience for the ever-increasing number of supporters and excellent working conditions for, amongst others, the media."

The statement continued: "This agreement with the city of Paris is part of the club's ambition to become one of the biggest clubs in Europe and a world-renowned sporting brand, by drawing on the values and notoriety of Paris.

"We are delighted that our renovation plans will be a significant contribution to the organisation of EURO 2016 and will enable France and Paris to fulfil its commitments to UEFA."

World’s players have their say

On 12 September, and in keeping with tradition, FIFA Ballon d’Or holder Lionel Messi cast the first vote in the process that will decide which players will line up in the 2013 FIFA/FIFPro World XI.

Since then FIFPro, the global professional footballers’ union, has been busy collecting the votes of Messi’s fellow professionals around the world, having sent out nearly 50,000 ballot papers in 68 countries. From Denmark to Zimbabwe and from Chile to Russia, the pros all have the chance to vote.

Among the voters is Cristiano Ronaldo, a fixture in the side for the last six years. “Obviously I’ll be voting again this year for the World XI,” said the Real Madrid ace. “For your colleagues to think you’re the best or that you deserve a place in the best team in the world for all the work you’ve done is the greatest honour we can have as players. Nobody’s opinion counts more than that of the players.”

Yet even a footballer of Ronaldo’s class has had problems in selecting his top 11. As well as consulting with his team-mates, he even sneaked a look at Iker Casillas’ card.

And the Portuguese star has not been alone in finding it hard to pick a team. After much head-scratching, Danish midfielder Lasse Schone was one of the last members of the Ajax dressing room to fill his card in. “The thing is, I never watch what defenders do,” he joked. “The hardest thing for me, though, is to choose the midfielders.”

Jokes and good humour have been the order of the day since voting began, though when it comes to actually naming their teams, the players take things very seriously. After all, no one knows better than they just how difficult it is to play at the top level. And with that in mind, they try to be as fair as possible in selecting the best players in each position.

Receiving more name checks than most are Germany’s leading players, including a goalkeeper who has enjoyed quite a year. “I like the Borussia Dortmund keeper but I don’t know how to spell his name,” admitted Gonzalo Villagra, who plays for Chilean club Union Espanola, with a laugh.

The custodian in question is Roman Weidenfeller, who got himself noticed during Dortmund’s run to the UEFA Champions League final. Reflecting on his vote, the self-effacing German shotstopper said: “We have a lot of options but nobody knows who’s going to be in the World XI.”

And nobody will know until the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala takes place in Zurich on Monday 13 January 2014.

Between now and then the names of the finalists in each category will be revealed. On 2 December the five goalkeeping candidates will be announced, followed two days later by the 20 defenders that will vie for one of the four places on offer to them. On 6 December the 15 players up for the three midfield slots in the FIFA/FIFPro World XI will be revealed, to be followed three days later by 15 forwards, who are also opting for three places in the all-star line-up.

The players of Roma, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are just some of the many who have already made their minds up, and the excitement is mounting as the voting deadline nears.

So who would you vote for? Members of The Club at FIFA.com will have the chance to answer that question when the FIFA/FIFPro World XI Predictor game, which went down very well with users last year, opens for business on 2 December.

There are some great prizes on offer, among them a shirt signed by all 11 of the players who will make up the 2013 star team. Predict the line-up voted for by the pros of world football, and you might just get your hands on it.

Pujol suffers collapsed lung

AFPValenciennes striker Gregory Pujol has been hospitalised after suffering a collapsed lung.

The 33-year-old was substituted after 33 minutes of the 1-1 draw against at Lyon at the weekend after suffering a heavy fall and he was eventually admitted to hospital and given treatment.

Valenciennes coach Ariel Jacobs confirmed on Tuesday that Pujol was due to be released on Wednesday or Thursday, but he will not feature against Lille on Saturday.

"He is in the hospital and should be released tomorrow or Thursday," he told the club's official website.

"The lung is slightly off. He suffered a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and an emergency drainage because there was an effusion of blood. He is already a pass for Saturday."
