Persistent heavy rain saturated the Tannadice playing surface forcing match officials to call a lunchtime inspection.
Following the check, and with further rain forecast for later in the afternoon, the decision was taken to call off the fixture early to prevent St Johnstone fans making the short journey north.
No new date for the fixture has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Dundee United have revealed their home game against Motherwell, scheduled for Saturday, February 22, has been moved to Friday, 21 February (7.45pm).
Also, the away match against Hibernian, due to take place on Saturday, March 1, has been moved back to the previous day with a 7.45pm kick-off.
