Rain ends NZ run chase in first test against Windies

(Reuters) - Rain scuppered New Zealand's chances of completing a first test win in over a year on Saturday as the opening match against West Indies at University Oval in Dunedin ended in a draw with the hosts just 33 runs shy of victory.

Light rain started falling just before the tea break with Ross Taylor on 16 and Corey Anderson on 20 having consolidated New Zealand's chase for 112 runs following a spectacular top-order collapse sparked by Shane Shillingford.

The hosts were on 79 for four at the end of the game when it was abandoned at 1810 local (0510 GMT) after off-spinner Shillingford had threatened to run through the side and seal a remarkable comeback victory on the final day.

Shillingford reduced New Zealand to 44 for four in the 16th over and had the visitors sniffing the possibility of becoming just the fourth side to achieve victory after being forced to follow on.

"Little bit disappointed but we can't do anything about the weather," New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said in a televised interview. "We played some excellent cricket but credit to the West Indies, they responded very well.

"To score 500 after being asked to follow on was a fine effort, but I thought we played some excellent cricket and were only 30 runs away from winning a test match."

SHILLINGFORD SPELL

Shillingford, who had opened the bowling with Tino Best as the pitch offered variable bounce and some turn, gave the hosts a real scare when he ripped the top off the host's batting order.

He had Peter Fulton caught by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin for three on the first ball of the final over before lunch, then did more damage after the break.

Aaron Redmond was caught at leg slip by Narsingh Deonarine for six before Hamish Rutherford was dismissed in exactly the same fashion as in the first innings, trying to hit a boundary down the ground only to be caught by Shannon Gabriel.

The 24-year-old Rutherford, who immediately dropped his head after he hit the ball, trudged off to ringing laughter from the West Indian fielders, one of whom yelled 'what a shot', as he departed for 20.

McCullum hit a four on the first delivery he faced, but his aggression was his downfall when he mistimed a sweep off Shillingford and Ramdin had time to take an easy catch to dismiss him for nine.

The chatter amongst the West Indians increased markedly as they sensed the possibility of a remarkable victory, knowing that only three other sides in cricket history had won a test after being forced to follow on.

Anderson and Taylor, who scored a career-best 217 not in the first innings, settled the home side's nerves and appeared to be well set to achieve victory in the final session before the rain came.

"We were still very confident that Ross and Corey would put together a partnership to win and we had some very good batters to come as well," McCullum added.

"We can still improve, but overall I thought it was a pretty good test by us."

West Indies' second innings had ended about 20 minutes before lunch with New Zealand capturing their final four wickets for the addition of 64 runs with Darren Bravo top scoring with 218 in their second innings of 507.

"It was a good comeback from us, though the weather did play a part," West Indies captain Darren Sammy said. "I think coming from India and only having a couple of days to get ready really showed in the first two innings of the match.

"The way we fought as a team, credit must go to Darren Bravo to put the team into a position where we are happy with the draw."

New Zealand have not won a test in more than a year, having now drawn six and lost four of their matches since McCullum took over the captaincy in late 2012.

The second game of the three-match series starts at Wellington's Basin Reserve on December 11.

Socceroos fearless, Japan and Korea quietly confident

(Reuters) - Clubbed in a veritable group of death for next year's World Cup, Australia believe they can spring a surprise while fellow Asian qualifiers Japan, South Korea and Iran were more cautious with their optimism despite being dealt kinder draws.

Grouped with both finalists from the last World Cup along with Chile, the Socceroos, thrashed 6-0 by Brazil and France in recent months, will probably need a miracle to progress from the group stage but midfielder Tommy Oar felt his side could excel without the shackles of high expectations.

"In our group we're probably least likely in terms of favourites to go through," Oar told Fox Sports News on Saturday.

"But I think that's perfect because when we go into games we have nothing to lose and we have nothing to fear," said the 21-year-old Utrecht player.

The Socceroos, playing in their fourth World Cup and only progressing from the group stage once in 2006, open their Group B campaign against Chile on June 13 before taking on the Dutch on June 18 and holders Spain five days later.

"We can just try and go for it and the pressure will be on the other teams," said Oar.

"It will be a great experience and I definitely think we can turn a few heads."

Drawn with Ivory Coast, Colombia and Greece in Group C, Japan have a much more favourable passage ahead and coach Alberto Zaccheroni was optimistic, if they can get off to a fast start.

"If we can play to the best of our ability then we can be a threat. I am confident," the Italian was quoted as saying by Kyodo news agency.

"Obviously getting off to a good start is important."

Asian champions Japan, who have twice made it to the last 16 in four World Cup appearance, meet Ivory Coast on June 14 before facing Greece (June 19) and Colombia (June 24) in conditions they expect would be similar to what they experienced in Brazil during the Confederations Cup in June.

"It will be hot and humid at the stadium and that is something that the African players are used to. We really need to be fully prepared," the Italian added.

ENJOY

A benign draw has also boosted South Korea's chance of progressing from Group H which contains Belgium, Russia and Algeria. Head coach Hong Myong-bo insisted, though, it was far from a cakewalk.

"People may think that it's an easy group, but that's not true," Hong was quoted as saying by the Asian Football Confederation.

"We shouldn't underestimate any of our opponents because they're all strong teams that are capable of going through," said the former member of the Korean team that reached the last four of the 2002 World Cup on home soil.

Korea begin their eighth consecutive World Cup finals campaign against Russia, who they lost 2-1 to last month, on June 17, before clashing with Algeria (June 22) and Belgium (June 26).

"We played a friendly against Russia in November but we will have to study them again, as things have changed," said Hong.

"Only good sides make it to the World Cup so we'll not only have to keep an eye on Russia, but on Belgium and Algeria too," he added.

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz did not place any burden of expectation on the shoulders of his players, asking them instead to enjoy the experience of playing in a group which twice champions Argentina are expected to win.

Queiroz's side, who have never been beyond the group stage in three previous World Cups, will also face African powerhouse Nigeria and newcomers Bosnia.

"For my players, it should be an honour to play against these rivals and it is important they go out and enjoy every minute of every match, eager to make it to the second round," said the former Portugal, South Africa and UAE manager.

"The key will be in our preparation. If we work hard, we will have a good opportunity. If not, we won't be in a position to take our chance."

LONDON (Reuters) - English FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic appointed former Manchester City and East Germany striker Uwe Rosler as manager of the Championship club on Saturday.

Rosler, 45, joins from League One (third tier) Brentford after compensation was agreed and replaces Owen Coyle, who left Wigan less than six months after taking over from Spaniard Roberto Martinez.

"Uwe is one of the brightest young managers in the Football League and his ambition is to manage in the Premier League," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told the club website (www.wiganlatics.co.uk).

"He impressed me enormously when I spoke to him, he has a strong philosophy about how to play the game and has a desire to shape all aspects of the long term future of the club. I think he can and will achieve great things here at Wigan Athletic."

Wigan, relegated from the top flight last season after stunning Manchester City 1-0 to win the FA Cup, are currently 14th in the Championship.

They are third in Europa League Group D but can still qualify for the knockout stages.

Two English lower league players charged over match-fixing

EmailPrint

LONDON (Reuters) - Two players from an English sixth tier semi-professional team have become the latest to be charged as part of an investigation into football match-fixing, British police said on Thursday.

Michael Boateng and Hakeem Adelakun, both 22 and from Whitehawk FC in Brighton, were charged with conspiracy to defraud contrary to common law and have been bailed to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court next Wednesday.

"They are the third and fourth people charged to date in connection with the National Crime Agency investigation into an alleged international illegal betting syndicate," a statement said.

Chann Sankaran, a 33-year-old Singapore national, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old with dual UK and Singapore nationality, were charged last week and have been remanded in custody.

A Daily Telegraph report last month said the focus of the high-profile probe was the lower leagues, although one former Premier League player who is now an agent but still playing at a minor level, was implicated.

One of the alleged fixers said in a covertly recorded interview that he had "manipulated" World Cup matches, the Telegraph added.

The investigation is highly embarrassing for English football, which prides itself as the largely unsullied birthplace of the game.

Earlier this year, an inquiry by European police forces uncovered a global betting scam run from Singapore.

About 680 suspicious matches, including in the European Champions League and qualifying for the World Cup and European Championships, were identified in the investigation - although pundits said many of the games were already known about.

The last major match-fixing scandal in England occurred in the mid-1960s when 10 players were found guilty and jailed.

No U-turn as English clubs shun Heineken Cup

LONDON (Reuters) - English clubs are set for at least one season without any European rugby after they confirmed their refusal to take part in a revamped Heineken Cup next season, despite last week's decision by their French counterparts to return to the fold.

The chairmen of the 12 Premiership clubs, as well as representatives from Leeds and Bristol, met in London on Thursday.

"The English clubs have unanimously re-confirmed their position. Having served notice in June 2012, they will not participate in any competitions run by ERC (European Rugby Cup) from 2014-15 season," a statement said.

The English clubs initially had the support of French clubs and, later, the Welsh regions for a proposed "Rugby Champions Cup", but last week the French said they had been persuaded by their union to withdraw from the breakaway group - for a year at least.

English club owners and Premiership officials have been at loggerheads with ERC, which runs the Heineken Cup and second-tier Amlin Cup, as well as the Irish, Scottish and Italian leagues, as they seek to reform aspects of qualification and payment.

ERC has proposed a reformatted tournament for next season, featuring 20 clubs instead of the current 24, as well as changes in the distribution of income.

The unions of France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy - but notably not England - recently issued a joint statement saying they backed ERC and the plans for a revised competition under its control.

That prompted last week's U-turn by the French clubs, which was somewhat clouded by suggestions that their loyalty might be for one year only and that they might still want to change the governance of Europe's premier club competition the following season.

However, that was not enough to convince the English clubs to go back on their stated desire to leave and set up an alternative competition.

"ERC does not structurally recognise the role of the leagues and clubs in driving the success of club competitions, under the overall governance of Unions," the Premiership statement said.

"The ERC voting structure is controlled by Unions even though the majority of commercial value is created by the independent clubs which represent 75 percent of the participants.

UNDER PRESSURE

"Proposals put forward to address a new structure within a Rugby Champions Cup were agreed by a majority of the Unions in October, alongside meritocratic competition formats and equitable financial distributions. However, these have not been accepted by all.

"The English Clubs have worked exhaustively over the last 18 months to propose solutions to the issues with the current European competitions and to provide a sustainable platform to grow the game in the various countries."

The Welsh regions have yet to comment on the latest developments but, under pressure from their union and in desperate need of finance and top-level competition to hold on to their top players, they are likely to switch back to the Heineken Cup.

England's top clubs, whose deal with UK broadcaster BT also presents a potential conflict with Sky's rights to show Heineken Cup matches, will now seek a way to fill the missing weekends, with games against South African sides being touted in the media as a possibility.

"The English clubs are now pursuing other options," the Premiership statement said.

English and Scottish clubs did not take part in the first Heineken Cup in 1994/95, English clubs boycotted the 1998/99 season and there was a proposed Anglo-French boycott in 2007/08, which was averted.

(Reuters) - Neil Wagner took the key wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul after getting some reverse swing with the old ball to help push New Zealand to within sight of victory in the first test against West Indies on Friday.

Left-arm seamer Wagner trapped Chanderpaul leg before for one midway through the morning session as the hosts reduced West Indies to 235 for four at lunch on the fourth day at University Oval.

Darren Bravo was 104 not out, his fifth test century, while Narsingh Deonarine was on 26 with West Indies still 161 runs from making New Zealand bat again.

The second new ball will be due shortly after the break.

Bravo and Marlon Samuels had resumed on 168 for two but were unable to really get going again as New Zealand maintained a tight line and length before Tim Southee reacted sharply to dismiss the latter caught and bowled.

The right-hander's dismissal for 23 left the visitors at 178 for three and when Chanderpaul was adjudged lbw seven runs later there was a noticable lift in the New Zealanders' body language as they sensed the possibility of victory.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum enforced the follow on before tea on the third day when they dismissed West Indies for 213 in their first innings.

New Zealand, who made 609-9 declared, have not won a test in more than a year, having drawn five and lost four of their matches since McCullum took over the captaincy in late 2012.

Kirk Edwards and Bravo had combined for a 117-run second wicket partnership late on the third day before Edwards was trapped in front by legspinner Ish Sodhi for 59 about 45 minutes before the end of play.

Sudamericana final evenly poised

AFPPonte Preta and Lanus could not be separated in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final as they played out a 1-1 draw in Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

A free-kick from each side provided the goals, with Paolo Goltz scoring for Lanus in the 57th minute and Felipe Bastos levelling 11 minutes later.

The pair will head back to the Buenos Aires suburbs next week to decide the tie, with away goals not taken into account should the second leg also end in a draw.

Lanus could have taken an earlier lead as Uruguayan striker Santiago Silva missed an incredible opportunity in the closing moments of the first period, when Jorge Pereyra-Diaz crossed the ball and he wasted the chance with the net empty.

Goltz then stepped up with a set-piece strike to ensure the visitors did belatedly take the advantage.

With 22 minutes remaining, Bastos equalised for the hosts with another free-kick that left keeper Agustin Marchesin with no chance.

The last five minutes of the game saw Ponte Preta go agonisingly close to victory as another free-kick by Bastos hit the crossbar.

Goltz told Fox Sports: "We played a good game, but Ponte Preta control dead balls very well and they are like penalties for them.

"Anyway, we will decide the tie at home and we'll fight for the title. We are satisfied with the score and I'm personally happy with the goal."

Keeper Marchesin added: "We clinched a good result. Ponte Preta took risks. We did not expect a match like this, but we are hopeful we can do our job well at home."

Despite the draw, Ponte Preta midfielder Elias is sure his team can react and win the title in Argentina.

He told Lancenet.com.br: "We have a bad taste because of what we did in this game. We were better and created more opportunities than Lanus.

"It won't be easy in Argentina. We are aware of that. But we'll go for the title even as visitors."

Turkey takes a global view for future growth

Getty ImagesNational teams comprised of players spread across the globe is commonplace in men’s football. Perhaps it is a sign of maturing in the women’s game that a similar bringing together of a nation’s diaspora is also starting to occur.

Though yet to truly make their mark in women’s football, Turkey is taking the game seriously and has started to put significant resources into grassroots development for female players. At senior level the national team includes players of Turkish-background who hail from a diverse collection of nations including Canada, Australia, USA, Sweden and Germany. In the short term, it is hoped that the experiences these players offer will help lift standards and buoy the next generation of youngsters.

Quantum leap
One such player to return to her roots and assist in the growth of Turkish women’s football is Australian-based Gulcan Koca. The Melbourne-born utility was plucked from relative obscurity as a peripheral player for W-League club Melbourne Victory in 2010, and thrust into the midst of a FIFA Women’s World Cup

Lawro's predictions

“David Moyes will be hoping that Robin van Persie will be fit, but that situation is worrying too”

When you see the scoreline of Manchester United's defeat by Everton in black-and-white, you think 'crikey, they have lost again at home'.

But United did not play that badly and they had as good, if not better chances to win the game.

Still, it showed us again that Old Trafford is not the fortress it was, and defeat puts the pressure back on United boss David Moyes.

By the looks of things, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all in decent form, United face a big fight just to get into the top four and clearly lots of work needs to be done to improve their squad.

Moyes will not be helped by having Wayne Rooney suspended for this game after he picked up his fifth booking of the season against Everton.

He will be hoping that Robin van Persie will be fit, but that situation is worrying too.

Moyes says it is not a serious injury but Van Persie has missed four games now. It is obvious how important he is to United, and they need him back soon.

Newcastle do not appear to be in great shape themselves, either. They had won four Premier League games in a row before playing Swansea on Wednesday but they were completely unhinged in Wales.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

Jim's prediction: 2-0

Motherwell v Celtic preview

Dylan McGeouch: Celtic winger is one of several doubts for the game at Motherwell

Celtic are beset by illness and injury problems ahead of their Scottish Premiership clash with Motherwell at Fir Park on Friday night.

Midfielder Tom Rogic has a calf problem, while wide men Dylan McGeouch (ankle) and James Forrest (hamstring) are also doubts for the match.

Forward Georgios Samaras and midfielder Nir Biton have both missed training in the last two days with a virus.

Celtic have been boosted with the return to training of defender Adam Matthews following shoulder surgery, but he will not be involved while Beram Kayal (foot) and Steven Mouyokolo (Achilles) remain out of action.

For the second season in succession Motherwell host Celtic in the aftermath of a domestic cup exit to a team from the bottom league.

Manager Stuart McCall will be hoping for a positive reaction this time, and he will be boosted by the return of a trio of players.

Iain Vigurs, fellow winger Lionel Ainsworth and full-back Simon Ramsden are all available following recent injuries.

But forward Bob McHugh, who played in the Scottish Cup defeat to Albion Rovers, is not included in the squad.

Despite both teams going into the match on the back of completely contrasting results, Celtic boss Neil Lennon is expecting nothing less than the usual frenetic Fir Park encounter with Motherwell.

While Motherwell lost to their Lanarkshire rivals last Saturday, 24 hours later Celtic trounced Hearts 7-0 in the same competition at Tynecastle.

"It will give them an extra edge," he said. "They have to restore some pride. It was a big shock because they have been so consistent over the last couple

of years.

"I remember coaching under Gordon Strachan when we beat St Mirren 7-0 and

the following weekend we lost 1-0 to them in the cup.

"We are in good form and we want to maintain that but we will come up against a very dogged and determined Motherwell on Friday evening."

New Hibs deal for Forster

Jordon Forster: New contract for Hibs youngster

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Get a £5 free bet every week Hibernian defender Jordon Forster has signed an extended contract that will tie him to the club until summer 2016.

Forster had signed a one-year deal at Easter Road in May after breaking into the first team and playing in the Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic.

But new Hibs boss Terry Butcher has moved quickly to keep the 19-year-old at the club in the longer term after impressive performances in his first two games in charge.

Forster told the club's official website: "I'm absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract. I'm enjoying every minute of my time at Hibs and believe I'm improving as a player.

"The new manager has been great with me and for the past two games he has given me an opportunity to show what I can do.

"I feel I'm learning with each and every game and my goal is to achieve success with Hibs."

Butcher added: "I think Jordon has done tremendously well. He is a big boy - strong, good on the ball and his timing in the air is very good as well.

"He is going to be a very good player and he is already a very good player.

"I've been delighted with him and he has shown maturity beyond his years."

Mourinho wants title-winning mentality

from Chelsea Jose Mourinho wants Chelsea to develop a title-winning mentality.

The Blues manager returned to Stamford Bridge in June after winning the Premier League twice in his first spell at the club.

"There is a lot of progress to be made," said the Portuguese, whose side are currently second behind Arsenal.

"There are things in the job that are not easy and one of them is to make the pressure of fighting for the title to be something natural."

England draw pot could change

2014 Fifa World Cup drawVenue: Costa do Sauipe, Bahia, Brazil Date: Friday, 6 DecemberCoverage: Watch on BBC Two from 16:30-17:45 GMT, live streaming online; listen on BBC Radio 5 live; text commentary on the BBC Sport website

England will be hoping to avoid a late World Cup draw switch after being put in an unseeded pot of European nations.

Roy Hodgson's team are included in Pot Four, along with eight other sides, for Friday's draw in Brazil.

However Fifa announced that one of the unseeded European teams will be chosen at random to move into Pot Two.

Brazil start in Sao Paulo

Hosts Brazil will be allocated position A1 in Friday's draw and will play the opening match in Sao Paulo on 12 June.

And to 'preserve the geographic balance of the draw' that side will be guaranteed to face one of the four seeded South American teams.

These are Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay.

Fifa revealed the draw pots on Tuesday. Should England avoid being moved ahead of the draw on Friday, they could face any of the top eight seeds from Pot One, rather than just the South American nations.

One of the European sides has to be moved to balance the draw as there are nine unseeded teams from this continent and only seven in Pot Two.

For the 2006 World Cup the lowest ranked European team took this slot, rather than it being draw at random. Under this system France would have been moved for the 2014 World Cup.

No more than two European teams, or one from South America, can be drawn in the same group for next year's competition.

As hosts, Brazil will be automatically placed into Group A. Groups will be made up of one team from each pot.

The other seeded teams in Pot One have been chosen according to Fifa's October's world rankings.

Pot 1 (top eight seeds): Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Germany, Switzerland, Uruguay

Pot 2: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chile, Ecuador

Pot 3: Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras

Pot 4: Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, England, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, France

Considine cuts down Thistle

Andy Considine's early header wins the day for Aberdeen at Firhill

Aberdeen recorded their third straight win over Partick this season as Andy Considine's early header secured a 1-0 win and a ticket to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

After their early breakthrough Derek McInnes' men were rarely troubled by a toothless Thistle, who slipped tamely to a fifth consecutive defeat.

Aberdeen forged ahead when Barry Robson's corner kick picked out Considine in the fifth minute and the defender crashed home a stooping header from six yards.

With 1,800 fans roaring them on, Aberdeen went for the jugular, Scott Fox having to claw away Peter Pawlett's dipping 25-yard volley and the Thistle keeper again showed his agility to keep out Ryan Jack's deflected effort.

Kallum Higginbotham dragged a bobbling shot across the face but is was a very rare threat to the visitors' goal, Gregg Wylde blazing wide at the other end after a lung-bursting run.

Calvin Zola headed over as the Dons again exposed Thistle's soft defensive centre before Thistle glavanised a brief - if ultimately fruitless - flurry before the break.

Aberdeen were content to hold what they had for much of the second period, and remained largely untroubled, a vain appeal for handball against Russell Anderson notwithstanding.

Niall McGinn found the side-netting from the angle before Higginbotham finally forced Jamie Langfield into his first serious save of the game with 10 minutes remaining.

Thistle pressed in vain for a late leveller, but it was Aberdeen who came closest to finding the net again, McGinn crashing one off the upright in added time.

May happy with Saints

Stevie May: Striker happy with St Johnstone

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Get a £5 free bet every week St Johnstone striker Stevie May insists he is happy at McDiarmid Park despite continuing speculation over his future.

The Scotland U21 international notched his 12th goal of the season as he helped the Saints to a 2-0 Scottish Cup fourth-round win over Livingston on Saturday.

Peterborough failed with a bid for May in August and last week it was reported that Rotherham offered £300,000 for the player which was rejected by the Scottish Premiership side.

However, May continues to ignore all transfer speculation.

"I have started well and I have to try to continue that form," said the 21-year-old.

"I have more goals than I would have thought at this stage of the season which is good. But I am not looking too far ahead.

"The gaffer keeps me informed but I didn't think too much about that (Rotherham), I had no decision to make.

"I am happy playing for St Johnstone and learning my trade, I am playing every week, doing well so there is no reason to look elsewhere."

McInnes hails fast start

Derek McInnes: Fast start impressed the Aberdeen manager

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Get a £5 free bet every week Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was delighted with the way his side started their Scottish Cup clash with Partick Thistle.

Andrew Considine's early goal at Firhill sent them through and the Dons have scored eight goals without reply in three meetings against Thistle this season.

McInnes was satisfied with the manner of the fourth-round win.

"It was important Thistle saw an Aberdeen team that was ready to go again. They have taken a couple of sore ones from us," he said.

"When you score an early goal sometimes it can put a bit of doubt into their heads, and there might have been an element of that because we were dominant in the first half.

"I felt our first-half approach and performance more than merited us going through.

"We are grateful that the opportunities we squandered never came back to bite us.

"But the first half, I thought we did all aspects of the game very well. We were aggressive, energetic, physical, bright in possession. The only thing that was missing was a second goal."

Thistle boss Alan Archibald added: "The start kills us.

"It takes the wind out of your sails and kills your game plan. I thought it affected us in the first half to be honest.

"It's something that has been a problem this season even though we have worked on it. I thought we had sorted it out last week because we defended well.

"I thought the second half was a lot better, we played the game in their half. We could have worked (Jamie) Langfield a bit more and things weren't going for us in the box."

Celtic run riot at Tynecastle

Kris Commons takes the plaudits after opening the scoring in the Tynecastle rout

Celtic took out their UEFA Champions League frustrations at Tynecastle, blowing away an inexperienced Hearts side 7-0 to reach the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Having lost out to AC Milan in midweek to crash out of continental competition for another season, the cup holders ran riot in Edinburgh with Kris Commons bagging a hat-trick in an imperious display on Neil Lennon's 200th game in charge of the club.

Three minutes had elapsed when Joe Ledley fed Commons down the inside-left channel and the midfielder fired beyond Jamie MacDonald and in off the far post.

The home side - with no outfield player over the age of 22 - was caught napping as Charlie Mulgrew picked out Commons (21) with a quickly taken free-kick and the Scotland international cracked in his second from the angle.

Clark stars in Rangers romp

Nicky Clark: Scored four goals as Rangers thrashed Forfar

Nicky Clark scored four goals as Rangers romped to a 6-1 win over Forfar at Ibrox to record their 19th consecutive victory.

Forfar are the only side to beat Ally McCoist's side this season after they won their League Cup tie at Station Park in August.

But there was to be no repeat performance in Scottish League One, with Lee Wallace and captain Lee McCulloch also on target after Gavin Swankie had earlier equalised Clark's opener.

Wallace made the opening goal, with Clark getting on the end of his cross to head past Loons goalkeeper Darren Hill.

Hill did well to keep out an angled drive from Fraser Aird and Forfar were soon back on level terms, Swankie firing in a shot from distance that left Rangers keeper Cammy Bell with no chance.

But that was as good as it got for the visitors, who found themselves 4-1 down at the interval.

Clark notched his second of the night when his deflected effort came off the hapless Darren Dods before Wallace cut inside from the left to fizz a low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Hill pulled off a superb save to deny Clark his hat-trick but he secured his treble before the break when he scored from close range after Ian Black's 35-yard shot came back off the crossbar to allow him to slot home.

Rangers continued to push for further goals in the second period and Bilel Mohsni's header skimmed off the bar just two minutes after the restart.

Instead it was left to Clark to add the next goal, although Mohsni played his part as he headed Aird's corner into the goalmouth for Clark to score from close-range.

McCulloch missed a penalty at the weekend but he made no mistake in dispatching his latest effort after David Templeton had been fouled in the area.

There was an added boost for Rangers fans when Dean Shiels came off the bench to make his first appearance since August after battling back from a long-term knee injury.

Hughes named Inverness boss

John Hughes: Replaces Terry Butcher at Inverness

Sky Bet Loading Market ... Football Betting Get a £5 free bet every week Inverness Caledonian Thistle have appointed John Hughes as their new manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The former Celtic defender secured the position ahead of the likes of Alloa boss Paul Hartley and former Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels after Terry Butcher left the club to move to Easter Road.

Hughes has been without a job since being sacked by Hartlepool at the end of last season.

The 49-year-old failed to keep Pools in League One after taking over when they were nine points adrift in November.

Hughes had instigated a revival and secured the manager of the month award in February following a seven-match unbeaten run, but his side then failed to score in eight games and were relegated despite a four-game undefeated finish to the season.

Hughes began his managerial career with Falkirk, taking them up to the top flight and keeping them there for four seasons, his final game a 1-0 Scottish Cup final defeat by Rangers in 2009.
