The striker, who hurt his knee in a match against St Mirren during October, suffered a setback last week and a resultant scan showed that the 31-year-old required surgery.
According to the St Johnstone website, this operation will happen on Friday of this week.
And there was further bad news with regards to Steven Anderson who sustained a serious hand injury against Partick Thistle towards the end of September.
His recovery is likely to take a further seven weeks and manager Tommy Wright said of MacLean and Anderson: "It's disappointing for everyone, not least the players, but we have to live with it and it is paramount that that we get it right medically.
"That's football and we'll just have to get on with it. Their on-going absence will continue to give opportunities to others to show what they can do."
